We can only guess what would have happened had the Hungarian Slovak Robert Vano remained a part of the pack he was born into in 1948 in Nové Zámky. Maybe he would become a well-known opera singer, maybe he would become a dance master and maybe he would never return from the mandatory army service. But now we know what would definitely not had happened hadn’t Vano left his pack. He wouldn’t know what it’s like sprinting through the state border with the rifles of the border guards pointed at his back. He wouldn’t be able to tell you how freedom tastes. And maybe he would never work his way through washing and cutting hair to becoming a respected fashion and art photographer.
