Featuring images from UNPOSED, the follow-up INDIAN UNPOSED, and his ongoing state-of-the-nation documentation of his homeland, this exhibition offers a brief yet true glimpse of Semetko’s technical brilliance and humanist vision. His gift for framing, for timing and for using relations between subjects to create impact or hint at a story is writ large. But in these spur-of-the-moment images we also find something deeper – a levity and even, at times, a commentary on the human condition. Whether he’s revealing humour or hidden beauty, illuminating the foibles of man or our need for intimacy, Semetko is that rare thing: a photographer who helps us see the everyday differently.

Lovers embrace as a lone man looks on conspiratorially. Children are frozen mid-jump, in a moment of pure glee. A street dog looks on quizzically from above a sign that reads ‘Ask Yourself Who Am I’. A woman leans provocatively against a police patrol car.

A master of exciting compositions and comic timing, American photographer Craig Semetko captures fleeting yet entertaining moments of unrehearsed existence. Honest, humane and often funny, his documentary photographs are chance encounters captured skillfully and decisively.

On paper, his career trajectory appears as atypical as his body of work. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Semetko started out his working career as a professional comedy writer and performer but found himself gravitating towards photography. A Leica camera, bought on a trip to Hong Kong in 2000, proved formative, as it went on to become his go-to means of storytelling, the expressive outlet for his highly attuned sense of the absurd and ironic. His approach to taking pictures evolved naturally in subsequent years and culminated in an acclaimed book, 2010’s UNPOSED, that arrived bursting with tiny, serendipitous moments that make us think, feel or chuckle.
