Leica Camera would like to introduce the first Thai photographer to grace the Leica Gallery Bangkok. Ourselves Solitude is a solo exhibition by Virunan Chiddaycha, Leica Thailand Ambassador.
Home is where one lives permanently. Home is where one finds a sensation of peace, a feeling of relief when you enter its cozy and familiar environment. However, for some reason I have spent many years trying to escape the ennui I felt in the place I once called “home”. I grew up in a typical middle-class Bangkok family. Throughout this period, I observed the lives of those surrounding me. The way that people choose to spend their lives in Thailand’s capital city and the way that society treats them fascinated me.
Returning to Bangkok many years later, I couldn’t help but notice the fantasy lives that thrive in this city, and how they get trapped and distorted by a variety of aspects: religion, politics, culture, economics. These factors enhanced the curiosity of me, an outsider, as I set about exploring the meaning of life as a middle-class Bangkokian.
In the first part of this series, I try to portray the futile fantasies of middle-class people who move to a Bangkok they see as being full of promise. The fiction created in each of these images represents the intangibility and elusiveness of their hopes and dreams. The second part exposes something of the underbelly of life, and depicts people’s experiences, including their isolation within this modern yet flawed and often corrupt city.
The third part is about the transformation we experience as we adjust our expectations to match what society has provided us. The use of monochrome seems to me a metaphor for the effacement and disappearance of ourselves as we blend into the urban environment. However, some of the unique characteristics and beauty of the individual will always remain.
