Широко открытыми глазами! – 100 лет фотографии Leica

The anniversary exhibition celebrates its premiere in the House of Photography in Deichtorhallen in Hamburg

This year, Leica Camera AG, Wetzlar, is celebrating 100 years of Leica photography. On the occasion of this special anniversary, the exhibition entitled Augen Auf! 100 Jahre Leica Fotografie (‘eyes wide open! 100 years of Leica photography’) will premiere in the House of Photography in Deichtorhallen in Hamburg on 24 October 2014 and can be viewed until 11 January 2015. Curated by Michael Koetzle (freelance writer, publicist and former editor-in-chief of Leica World), the project illuminates various aspects of 35 mm photography in 14 chapters – from journalistic strategies and documentary approaches to free artistic positions. Around 500 works by more than 140 photographers are supplemented by magazines, periodicals, books, advertising media, brochures, camera prototypes and films in a retrospective of technical and photographic history.

The exhibition Augen Auf! 100 Jahre Leica Fotografie goes on tour in 2015 and can be seen in the Fotografie Forum and the Leica Galerie in Frankfurt (March to June 2015), in the C/O Berlin (August to November 2015), at Westlicht/Ostlicht in Vienna (December 2015 to February 2016) and in the Versicherungskammer in Munich (March to June 2016).

Augen Auf! 100 Jahre Leica Fotografieillustrates the quantum leap in photography triggered by the technical innovations of the Leica (Leitz Camera) at its belated launch in 1925, following delays due to the First World War. Its handy size and portability transformed photography into a part of everyday life that was quickly taken for granted. What’s more, it offered easier access to photography not only to professionals, but also to amateur photographers, newcomers and the emancipated women of its day. Alongside works by internationally acclaimed Leica photographers like Alexander Rodchenko, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Christer Strömholm, Robert Frank, Bruce Davidson, William Klein, William Eggleston, René Burri, Thomas Hoepker and Bruce Gilden, the anniversary exhibition also shows lesser-known photographs captured by amateurs and artists whose names have never been associated with 35 mm photography until today – such as Ilja Ehrenburg, Alfons Walde, Ben Shahn and George Grosz. The project is further enriched by significant photographs – some of which can be seen here for the first time – on loan from the factory archives of Leica Camera AG in Wetzlar, international collections and museums and with the kind permission of private collections (F.C. Gundlach Collection, Skrein Collection, WestLicht Collection).
